Our cycling tips in and around Annecy
Where we love to ride, grab a coffee or have a glass of wine
Semnoz – 1699m ***
Le Semnoz is the closest big ascent from Annecy. The small ski station at the top has hosted the arrival of the Tour de France and the Etape du Tour in 2013. The Semnoz is a fantastic climb. Since 2013 it has become increasingly popular with both local and international cyclists. In addition there are 5 different routes up to the summit, which provide good variety.
Col de la Forclaz – 1147m ***
At the summit you get probably one of the best views of the Annecy lake. You can climb the Col de la Forclaz from 2 completely different routes. Both ways up will be a challenge with some sections at 12/13% gradient. We would argue that the ascent from Talloires, albeit a big longer, is slightly easier than the one from Vésonne.
Col des Contrebandiers – 1054m *
The Col des Contrebandiers is almost completely unknown and a one-way route as the top is a dead end. On a clear day, you can get a great view of Mont Blanc on your way up. The quality of the tarmac is not the best, however you may not cross a single car. We would argue that the poor road surface is a price worth paying to discover this little known climb !
About 11km ascent for 600m+
Col de la Colombiére – 1613m ***
This is the closest really famous Tour de France climb from Annecy, offering two very different ascents. The climb from Le Grand Bornand is significantly easier than the one from Cluses via Le Reposoir. For an extra challenge, climb the really hard col de Romme before tackling the last hard section of the Colombière, like the cyclists of the Tour de France did in 2018.
Col de Leschaux – 897m *
It’s a 12km ascent from Sevrier with a very easy gradient. At the summit, you can enjoy a coffee stop and then decide to keep going straight for a ride around the Semnoz or just turn right and go up for an other 12km to the top of Semnoz
Col de Chérel – 1495m ***
This is probably the most beautiful gravel pass in the Annecy area !
The ascent is quite long with some steep sections (12%). After few kilometres the road turns to gravel and becomes quite bumpy. Only tackle this route on gravel or mtb bike !
The quiet valey is absolutely stunning.
The descent on the other side is very steep and gnarly but the forest and the views are absolutely amazing.
Col du Plane – 1339m ****
Starting in Le Châtelard, the Col du Plane is also a very quiet ascent. The last kilometers are very steep but at the top you will find a beautiful gravel road going down in a stunning valley before joining the road to Col de Leschaux.
Semnoz ***
The Semnoz is Annecy’s mountain biking paradise with plenty of amazing trails at the town’s doorstep.
You can also take a bus to the top and enjoy a 17km downhill ride. A must !
Mount Veyrier ***
Mount Veyrier is the big mountain that you see to the east of Annecy. Famous for the great views over the lake, especially at sunset, Mount Veyrier also offers plenty quite technical trails in the forest. We recommend the North side of the mountain, which has the best prepared for mountain biking trails.

Meet Vincent and his team and come and share some great local cheeses and cured meats served on a wooden cheese board. Their fantastic wine list may not help you recover from a long day in the saddle but makes this a great local wine bar.

Why has Annecy become such a popular cycling destination ?
Also know as the “Venice of the Alps” Annecy is becoming an increasingly popular base for cycling holidays and for many good reasons.
Only a 45 minute drive from Geneva airport and with a direct highway, Annecy is a very easy place to reach and offers the perfect gateway to some of the most iconic cycling routes.
The Tour de France passed through Annecy in 2013 and 2017 allowing enthusiasts to discover its potential as a cycling destination and since then cycling tourism has boomed.
However, Annecy is equally well suited for family holidays, honeymoon retreats or a training camp with your friends. Annecy offers entertainment for everybody. The kids can enjoy the lake whilst you are powering up the legendary Col de la Colombière or one of the other numerous passes around the lake.
You can easily enjoy a full week in Annecy without ever riding the same loop or mountain pass twice.
